About the Ho Chi Minh Programme:

In this volunteer programme, you’ll be working in a home that looks after the disabled. This childcare home cares for 20-25 Vietnamese children with a mixture of disabilities daily. You’ll be supporting the disabled children so they can have a better/happier life, gaining insights into the local way of working, and also learn a few basics on how to take care of children with special needs.

What will I be doing on the programme?

  • You’ll mainly be caring for the children. This will be in the form of comforting them, playing games, and socialising with them. Previous experience in this field would be helpful but not essential.
  • The key area for improving the quality of the children's lives is enhancing their speech and muscular capacity. Daily regimes are carried out for the children, in which you too can play a part.
  • Other activities encouraged and greatly enjoyed by the children include playing games, dancing and singing. Painting, art and other means of creativity is encouraged by the hospital for the children.

Here’s what your typical schedule may look like:

  • If this is your first week, you will be introduced to the project and the staff. At this point you will also discuss your upcoming role at the project. You will be introduced to the children and will have the chance to discuss with the manager about your desired role in the project.

Tuesday to Friday

  • You will begin your disabled children’s home placement. Your exact role will depend upon the needs of the disabled children’s home at the time. Playing games with the children, helping with their speech and posture are commonly carried out.

  • During your stay, you will be living in a dorm on college campus right in the centre of the city, with up to 8 people sharing.
  • The accommodation is located on a campus in a college dorm. As such, it follows certain campus rules such as a night curfew.
  • We also have a room reserved as an “office”, where you can go to if you want some peace and quiet. We have books and magazines available here for you to borrow.
  • There is the nice local café next to our dorm. A beautiful and peaceful place where you can enjoy fresh juices, snacks etc.
  • There is wifi in public areas
  • Laundry facilities are available
  • Please be aware that this accommodation has a 23:30 curfew

  • All meals included. Basic Vietnamese meals are provided on campus. Food include some western dishes such as sandwiches, spaghetti and bread.
