Teach Children English in Sri Lanka

Are you passionate about teaching, and love children? Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and is in real need of native English speakers to help teach as volunteers - this is a great way to teach English without having to be TESL qualified!

About the Teach English in Sri Lanka Project:

The education system in Sri Lanka faces several major challenges; including lack of training for school teachers,inefficient administration, limited government funding for education, and much more, leading to the lack of quality education in Sri Lanka.

The biggest problem in terms of education is the lack of English speakers amongst the marginally poor. English as a language is extremely important for the locals, given that Sri Lanka is emerging as a popular destination for tourism. 


What will I be doing on the project?

Volunteers on the English teaching program will be working in local primary schools and kindergartens assisting both teachers and students alike.

Tasks include:

Teaching Kindergarten classes, working with children age 3-5 years; 
  • Basic English - alphabet, small words, picture associations
  • Art based learning
  • Rhymes and song time
  • Assisting teachers in the classrooms
  • Playtime - organising easy games or sports
  • Helping with meal times and break times
  • Preparing teaching resources for teachers to use in the classroom

Teaching at a Primary School - working with children aged 6 to 12 years; 

  • The teaching hours are 8am to 12 pm. 
  • You will be teaching Basic English - school textbook /curriculum will be following
    Basic Math or Science subjects
  • Conduct Art based learning
  • Assisting teachers in the classrooms
  • Playtime - organising easy games or sports
  • Story time- reading stories
  • Preparing teaching resources for teachers to use in the classroom
  • Organising clubs and activities beyond the classroom (after school clubs)
  • One to one teaching or small group sessions with weaker students

 

Program Details: 
  • Availability: Jan, Feb, May, June, July, August, October, November
  • Project Start Date: Saturdays
  • Project Work Days: Monday to Fridays (weekends are free)
  • Support: Program Manager gives training on arrival, project coordinators help at the projects (with ideas for lesson plans and delivery) and teachers provide curriculum or text books to follow. 
  • School Year: Starts in June - Ends in March.
  • School Holidays: April, May, 10 days in August end/Sept & 10 days during Christmas 
  • Alternatives during School Holidays/Exams: Summer Camp (During April and May)
  • Min Project Duration: 2 weeks upwards
  • Requirement: Must be 18 yrs or over
  • Nearest Airport: Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport
  • Major Holidays in Sri Lanka:April and September
