About the Fiji Cleanup

On this exciting volunteer project you'll be part of a small crew sailing a double hull yacht around the coast of Fiji, stopping to surf, swim, paddle board, or just lay on the beach - but you'll also collect any ocean debris along the way. That's when things get interesting - you'll then be part of turning that plastic into diesel or plastic building bricks,  helping to save the world’s oceans from the damaging effects of plastic.

What will I be doing?

You will be sailing aboard a 38ft traditional double hull voyaging canoe. You will have the chance to snorkel, dive, surf, paddle or simply relax on the decks.

As a volunteer you will assist with some activities including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting with sailing to outer islands, navigating, maintenance etc.
  • Performing beach clean-ups and data collection.
  • Quantifying results of plastics found.
  • Community engagement and education.
  • Demonstrate a variety of local processing solutions.

Volunteers will be working alongside the Captain, local staff and at times visiting scientists.

Volunteers are expected to work as a team and be upbeat and positive regarding cleaning the ocean and able to adapt to daily chores.

Be the change:

  • You’ll also get the chance to visit local villages teach locals about waste plastics in our oceans. The developing island nations this project works within has little to no waste management available, education is poor and resources for local systems are limited.
  • They work alongside the communities they visit to provide hands on demonstrations of how to keep their shorelines clean, and locally utilise the waste plastics collected.
  • Be the change and live the slogan: 'Leave everywhere better than you found it’. ‘Leave everywhere better than you found it’.
  • On this rewarding project, you will feel you have made a difference by personally engaging with locals and local businesses and leaving them with the tools to look after our beautiful oceans.

  • You will stay in a cabin aboard the vessel for accommodation

All basic food for three meals a day is includedNo special equipment is required from the volunteers, the project provides everything. However if there are special dietary requirements, we must understand prior to booking so we can assess if it is achievable to accommodate.

Things to note:

  • The Season for Fiji in starts in May and Finishes end of August.
  • This is due to safety concerns and not running programs at sea during cyclone season. They move to Tonga in August, where you can join them for more adventures and volunteering with local communities.
  • When arriving at Nadi international airport a representative from our from our team will greet at you and transfer you directly to the project.
  • Changeover days are normally Sunday, as we can coincide this while re-supplying and dropping other volunteers. If Sunday arrival is not suitable, we can problem solve this easily with a water taxi or our 23ft support vessel!
