Price of visas to increase for the UK Ancestry and YMS Working Holiday Visa - New Zealanders to Pay Annual Fees to Access NHS

On 6 April 2016, the UK intends to extend the International Health Surcharge (IHS) to Australian and New Zealand nationals, who until now have been exempt.

Thousands of young Australians and New Zealanders head to live and work in the UK each year, and accessed the National Health Service (NHS) for no real cost apart from contributions from wages.

For the two-year Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa experience, they will now have to pay an additional £300 (£150 per year) on top of the existing visa fee.

For those applying for UK Ancestry this is an additional £1000 (£200 for each of the 5 years).

Vicki Kenny, Owner & Director of International Working Holidays in New Zealand, a company that has assisted thousands of young travellers with their working holiday experience has said, “The UK has become the place many Kiwis go on their Big O.E., many of whom have parents who enjoyed a similar experience. There is no doubt that this additional fee will prove prohibitive and will deter many from embarking on this invaluable life experience.”

Sarah Geard, a recent Ancestry visa arrival from Australia added, “I would definitely have considered an alternative destination if I’d had to pay an extra £1000 upfront, particularly since there are so many less costly destinations to choose from!”

If you are planning on heading to the UK and want to avoid the additional IHS fee then you’ll need to submit your visa by the 5th of April.
