Tess travels solo to Bali

Tess travels solo to Bali

Author -  Tess Opie

I wanted to go somewhere not too far to fly to, somewhere cheap and somewhere that had turtles.

I spoke to Shelby at International Working Holidays and she was my seller for sure! Great to talk to someone that has been there and experienced it for themselves.

I booked maybe less than a month before I left. I had the perfect opportunity to do something for three weeks and I have always wanted to do a volunteer project – everything just seemed to fall into place perfectly, Thanks to the IWH team!

Just before I boarded the plane I was very excited with a few nerves!

It was reassuring to know that they I was being picked up from the airport once I arrived and then taken to the volunteer base.

I woke early to the sound of the traditional Balinese prayer of Tri Sandhya. This week was the beginning of the introduction week which was full of language and cultural sessions, walking tour around the village and rice fields, batik painting class, cooking class, Balinese flower and offering class, spiritual tour, visiting the monkey forest, Ubud market and going to a traditional Balinese dance show. Everything in this week was so much fun!

I really enjoyed learning about the Balinese culture and traditions.

Week two was off to Nusa Penida for the sea turtle research and rescue project this involved cleaning tanks and turtles, collecting plastic off the beach, finding and catching crabs and the best part releasing a turtle back into the sea….AAAAAMAZING

I cannot speak highly enough of the International Working Holidays partner, the local volunteer company. They are all so humble, welcoming and supportive with everything.

I learned that travelling solo was actually a lot of fun - you put yourself out there more and I met so many wonderful people from all over the world!  I can’t wait to try travelling solo again!

I went over with very little expectations and had an absolute blast! New experiences, new friends and new culture – it’s all there…

GO AND GRAB IT YOU WONT REGRET IT!
