Poppy's au pair experience so far…

Poppy's au pair experience so far…

Author -  Poppy Edge

America has always been a place I have wanted to go since I was a child.

After I finished school I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life and I was too scared to commit to something I wasn't 100% sold on.

Early childhood teaching was always something I had thought about but again I wasn't sure if I would love it.

Me at Disneyland in California
Coming from Taupo, a rather small town in New Zealand there weren't too many opportunities for me to grow and get out of my comfort zone. I decided to become an au pair after doing a lot of researching online about the different things I could do in America. I chose to work with nannies abroad because of their great reviews and amazing program!!
After a month of filling out forms and getting my profile ready, I had an interview with my local interviewer and I was ready to go. Soon after that, I was matched with a lovely family in New Canaan Connecticut. After a 12hour flight to San Francisco and a 6-hour flight across America, I finally arrived in New York.

I was met at the airport by some of the friendly staff from au pair in America.

Me and the kids

I was lucky to also met a girl from Australia at the airport so we travelled in the car to the hotel together. Orientation was 2 days of training to get us ready for our time here in America. They went through everything from our insurance to first aid and even fun things to do with the kids in summer and in winter. I found the things I learned in orientation to be very useful to me so far.

Me at the padre's baseball game in Sandiego

I have now been in America for 4 and a half months with an amazing family who has been extremely inclusive.

I have been to California for spring break with them where we got to go to Disneyland and a baseball game in Sandiego. We also had a campfire on the beach with hot dogs and smores, living the American dream!! I found it challenging at first to form new friendships like the ones I had in New Zealand but through perseverance and putting myself out there, I have now made some friendships that will definitely last forever. I have now decided on taking the travel classes to get my credits that are needed.

I am excited for what the rest of my year has in store for me!!!
