Marine Ecology Internship

Marine ecology students can get involved in the shark research & protection program in Sodwana Bay. This  organization actively addresses the exploitation of shark and fisheries in South African waters.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION AND TASKS:

Rotate between the various decisions within an accommodation establishment and gain valuable experience.

  • Theory sessions to give a firm foundation to the species of marine life inhabitated along the Sodwana Bay coastline.
  • Conservation sessions providing outline into the issues South African marine life are facing and how to assist.
  • Lab sessions involving shark identification and measuring, tagging, and genetic sampling.
  • Skills development including free diving, snorkeling, and shark encounters
  • Data collection and input for analysis, includes environmental conditions, sightings and bathymetry, map generations for tracking

ABOUT THE COMPANY

As an organization they have been involved with sharks day and night for the last 13 years; promoting conservation, teaching courses, assisting with research and conducting 1000's of shark dives. They have bundled this all into the program to give interns a worthwhile introduction into the study and conservation of sharks and local marine life.
