Au Pair in America Amy

Au Pair in America Amy

Author -  Amy McCartin

For the past four years I had been teaching in an Early Childhood centre in my hometown which I absolutely loved!

I always knew that I wanted to nanny overseas and I felt like now was the right time in my life to start this new adventure!

I had been looking at the Nannies Abroad website for a few months before I finally decided to take the plunge, fill out my application and submit it. It was a really hard decision to make, knowing that I would be leaving my family, friends and all the children I had been teaching for the past four years, but it just felt like the right time to do it so I did!

I have always wanted to nanny overseas and live in America for a few years so this way I got to experience the best of both worlds!

Just before I boarded the plane I felt a wide range of emotions. Sad that I was leaving my entire world behind. Nervous to move to the other side of the world to a country I didn't really know and live with another family. But also very very excited for this new adventure and chapter in my life!

I was lucky enough to fly over with two other Au Pairs who are from Australia and when we arrived in New York we collected our luggage, then headed to orientation for the next couple of days. After orientation was finished, a car picked me up and took me to my host families apartment in Manhattan where I met my host dad. The next day I traveled out to The Hamptons to meet my host mum and three host children, who showed me around the house and showed me all their favorite toys!

During the past four months of living in America I have gained so many valuable experiences!

Getting out of my comfort zone, saying yes to things I normally wouldn’t and getting to build relationships with people from different cultures all around the world!

I think I am most proud of the moment I got on the plane and then when I arrived in NYC. It has always been a huge dream of mine to live in NYC and to actually be here doing what I love still amazes me every day!

If your are considering being an Au Pair in America I say just go for it!! It is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! You get to do things that get you may not get to do in your home country, meet people from all round the world, experience a new culture as well as all the other cultures around you, you get to travel to and around a new country and you learn so much about yourself during the process!

My time in America so far has been amazing and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
