Alicia's Experience in South Africa

Alicia's Experience in South Africa

Author -  Pops

I always wanted to do a project with animals and I really wanted to help volunteer to protect them! Not many people get to say they experienced wildlife so hands on.

I thought the work would be more full-on and hard, but it was so much fun! I also didn't expect the accommodation to be so amazing! Now that I’m back home, it doesn't feel like home any more! South Africa and that lodge feels more homely and I miss it everyday!

The project opened my eyes and mind up to the world, it made me appreciate that you need to experience places for yourself, don’t believe everything you read or hear. It made me realise that I can travel far away from home for a long period of time and be okay! All I want to do now is travel and not come back.

It was truly the experience of a lifetime. You might not have the chance to get up close to these animals in wild like I did, in ten years time, so it truly feels like something special to help conserve and protect them. You meet so many amazing people along the way; staff and travellers. I have learnt so much while travelling and gained a lot of independence.

I learnt a lot of facts about all the animals on the farm and was constantly learning everyday. Our first day the owner, sat down with us and explained everything; how the farm works, what they do. She walked us through feeding, breeding etc.

Cheetah day was the best day! Allen (one of the cheetahs) knows how to make it a lot of fun, we always had a laugh!
We’d rake their enclosures and feed them. I also loved keeping the baby hyenas company; we look after them, feed them and stimulate the cubs.

I will definitely come back to this project, I’m actually already planning my trip back and hope to stay a lot longer!
